Willesden Green Town Team host ‘community meet & greet’ day at Willesden Green station

On Saturday 14th October, members of Willesden Green Town Team hosted a stall at Willesden Green underground station to let local businesses and residents know about their new Breathe London node installed on Willesden High Street last month.

The stall featured informational leaflets from Breathe London and Mums for Lungs and is a great example of Breathe London community groups using local data to open a conversation about air pollution with the local community.

“We spoke to a number of residents who had concerns about air pollution in the area and who were interested in the project and potentially getting involved. Our local councillors also paid us a visit on the day and we’ll be circulating more information about this via our social media.”

Willesden Green High Street (A407), one of the longest in London, is an important arterial road that connects Willesden Green to the North Circular Road and runs parallel to the railway tracks from Willesden Green underground station to Dollis Hill and beyond. The high street which also stretches to Duddenhill Lane is dotted with light industrial businesses, Willesden Bus Garage and construction of new residential developments, all of which add to and trap air pollution at street level. Pedestrians, local businesses, residents and school children all share these busy streets with buses, cars, motorbikes and heavy goods vehicles, breathing in the small particulates and other emissions on a daily basis.

“We are thrilled to be a recipient of the ‘Breathe Node’ for our community.

Our sensor, which is positioned on the busy High Road in Willesden Green, will be testing for and reporting on levels of

small particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) both of which are dangerous to health. What’s great is that

the data that’s captured, along with all other sensors in the programme, will be available for everyone to view in real-time

on the Breathe London website (www.breathelondon.org).”
