St George's Neighbourhood Action Team

About us

St George's Neighbourhood Action Team (formerly Shadwell Responds) is a community -led vision for St George in the East:

Work begain in 2019 to create a vision for the following and has engaged with over 500 people from schools to the elderly across 10 different institutions and multiple religions (reflecting the diversity of the local communtiy and Tower Hamlets):

- To build truly affordable communty-led housing in a heritage sensitive context to imporve the wider area

- To influence the design of St Georges Leisure Centre to create more active facades and provide natural surievillance that would improve the wider area

- To improve the wider area, considering the gardens, surrounding roads and how freindly they were for pedestrians and their impact on the place with a hope to imrpove safety and create a place which supports the well-being, health and happiness of local residents. As part of this we thoguht about pollution from the Ratcliffe Highway and Connon Street Road.

Our aim

As part of this community-led vision key ideas for ‘The Highway’ included:

  • Create one continuous plaza from the front of the Church that extends across the highway, using one continuous level incorporating a new pedestrian crossing

  • Add places for those less mobile to sit and rest along the road

  • Make it safe to cycle along

  • Reduce the speed that vehicles travel on ‘The Highway’ using measures such as a raised pedestrian crossing, road design and cameras.

  • Add street trees near edge of road to provide shade, increase air quality and slow traffic. There may also be room for greenery in the central reservation

  • Improve signage to local places for interest for people walking

In realising our community-led vision we are keen to understand the implications of the pollution from ratcliffe highway to support our vision to improve the area and thereby improve the air pollution.
