R-Urban Poplar and Leaders in Community

About us

R-Urban Poplar is an eco-civic hub located on the edge of the Teviot estate, in Poplar, London. The project aims to develop civic resilience in the face of climate change through a public programme of events, workshops and infrastructures. We have two main strands to our work, the first works towards prototyping a just food system which places circularity at its heart, the second focuses on resource re-use and repair.

Leaders in Community is a youth-led charity run by a group of active local young people from Tower Hamlets. We were set up in 2009 by a group of young adults who wanted to improve their local services. We have a variety of creative learning programmes aimed to empower young people in leadership and governance. The programmes run throughout the year and are free for all young people.

Together, R-Urban and LiC have been working together between our two sites for the last couple of years. With our collaborative work exploring themes of urban food growing, circular systems and localised biodiversity improvements, and having previously undertaken research projects linked to air quality, we’re excited to further explore and understand the conditions that we work within, as well as working on air quality improvements on our estate – with the quantitative data to back it up! Our programmes are largely delivered through free educational workshops with a wide range of local residents, and we look forward to introducing ideas and learnings from this to the sessions!
